You are very welcome

Coming to a church for the first time can feel like a big step — especially if you are not sure what to expect. So let us say this plainly: you are very welcome at St John’s Studley.

Whether you have been a Christian for many years, are returning to church after some time away, are exploring faith for the first time, or are simply looking for a quiet place to pray, we would love to welcome you.

You do not need to know all the words, understand everything, or have everything in life neatly sorted before you come. None of us do. Come as you are.

  • Our main Sunday service is:

Sunday at 10am — Holy Communion

We also have a quieter midweek service:

Wednesday at 10am — Holy Communion

Our Sunday service usually lasts around one hour. It includes Bible readings, prayers, a sermon, hymns or songs, and Holy Communion.

  • St John’s is a Church of England church, so our worship follows the Anglican tradition. That means there is a shape and rhythm to the service, with prayers, readings from the Bible, and Holy Communion at the heart of our worship.

You do not need to know what to do. There will usually be a service sheet or book to help you follow along, and you are welcome simply to sit, listen, and take things in.

There is no pressure to join in with everything straight away.

  • Please wear whatever you feel comfortable in.

Some people come dressed smartly, others more casually. There is no dress code. We are much more interested in welcoming you than in what you are wearing.

  • Yes. Absolutely.

Church is not only for people who have everything worked out. It is also for people with questions, doubts, hopes, fears, and curiosity.

You are welcome to come and see. You will not be put on the spot or asked to explain yourself.

  • During Holy Communion, Christians remember Jesus’ death and resurrection by sharing bread and wine.

If you usually receive Communion in your own church, you are welcome to receive Communion with us.

If you do not receive Communion, or would rather not, you are still very welcome. You can either stay seated, or come forward for a prayer of blessing. If you would like a blessing, simply keep your hands lowered or bring a service sheet with you.

No one will mind. No one will be watching. We promise.

  • Yes, children are very welcome at St John’s.

We know that children make noise, wriggle, ask questions, drop things, and occasionally provide their own sermon commentary. That is all part of being a church family.

  • Yes, our church hall has 30 parking spaces.

There is also parking available nearby on surrounding roads. If you are visiting for the first time and are unsure where to go, please contact us and we will be happy to help.

  • St John’s Studley is on Church Lane in Upper Studley, Trowbridge.

    Address:
    St John’s Church
    Church Lane
    Upper Studley
    Trowbridge
    BA14 0EH

A note for sat navs and search engines: please search for our postcode rather than just “St John’s Trowbridge.” There are two St John’s churches in Trowbridge, and a general search may send you to our Roman Catholic brothers and sisters on the other side of town. Lovely people, wrong St John’s.

  • Yes. Our church and hall are both accessible to wheelchair users.

We also have an induction loop in place for those who are hard of hearing. If you use a hearing aid, please switch it to the T setting to connect to the loop system.

If you have any questions about access before you visit, please contact us. We want to make your visit as easy and welcoming as possible.

  • After many of our services there is time to stay, talk, and get to know people.

We gather in the Church Hall for good coffee (expertly blended by our very own Tony) tea and biscuits.

You do not have to stay, but you would be very welcome to. It is often the easiest way to meet a few people and begin to feel at home.
